Those pilings don't look deep enough. A correspondent writes,
"Unskilled structural engineers learning by doing. Soft, soggy silt soil sinks soon. Leaning Tower of Pisa fast forward."

    BTW, didn't the recent release of the latest PISA results show students in Shanghai scoring at the top?

    Actually this happened way back in 2009. The proximate cause was excavation for a building next to this one piling dirt up too closely to this building, then a rainstorm compacted the soil. Without the excavation the building would have been fine. Until the next earthquake that is.
