Falling Demand for SILVER in Photography

From Wikipedia:
"The use of silver in photography has rapidly declined, due to the lower demand for consumer color film... the total amount of silver consumed in 2007 by the photographic sector compared to 1998 is just 50%."

However, it turns out that the Indians use silver as a dessert topping. Must be nice!

Another casualty of the digital era. They should place silver in the eye pieces for digital cameras to fight pink eye! That should make up the difference.

OT-- WSJ has a fascinating new article about twitter, "Twitter as Tech Bubble Barometer." The choice parts:

But what's remarkable is the money that... frames the discussions with at least some potential suitors: an estimated valuation in the neighborhood of $8 billion to $10 billion.

This for a company that... had 2010 revenue of $45 million—but lost money...

People familiar with [Twitter] said the company believes it can grow into a $100 billion company.
To do that, Twitter has been hiring engineers and increasing its work force to more than 350, up from 100 in January 2010.

100bn!?? They're even more deluded than the prospective acquirers.

Good find.

This is really important, we are watching an echo dotcom bubble in slow motion here.

Note the return of alternative metrics besides cash flow.

"Are these prices justifiable based on financial multiples? No," said Ethan Kurzweil of venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners. But these start-ups are building social services and have lots of data about their users and "the market is valuing that mightily right now."

i.e. "fundamentals don't matter" like Cramer's Winners of the New World speech that top-ticked the 2000 bubble

Talk to Bernanke about what $100b might buy you one day.

CP,

You make a good point. There is definitely falling demand for SILVER in pornography.

The Internet is filled with pictures and videos that don't require any silver at all. Most of them can be viewed for free too, which would support your deflationary stance.

Oops! My bad. You said photography!

Shame on me for going down this path. I just couldn't help it. ;)

You know what? I'm not sure how much silver is needed by facebook, but I don't think it's very much.

And I don't think it would be "used up" if they do need it, so that doesn't help cause the supply OR demand to explode.
